Handyman in La Porte, TX

La Porte sits at the northwest corner of Galveston Bay, where the San Jacinto River and the Ship Channel meet the open water, about a twenty-minute drive east of central Pasadena. An investment group founded it in 1892 as a real estate venture, selling the idea of a breezy bayfront town, and in the 1920s and 1930s Sylvan Beach became a nationally known resort with a dance pavilion that drew crowds from all over Texas. Today La Porte is a city of about 35,000 people, and it lives with a split personality: quiet residential streets and bay views on one side, and some of the busiest port and industrial land on the coast on the other, with the Port of Houston's Barbours Cut container terminal on the north and the Bayport industrial district and terminal to the south. The housing reflects a long history. Near the bay and the old downtown along Main Street there are small frame houses from the 1940s and earlier, then postwar ranch homes across the middle of the city, 1970s and 1980s subdivisions as industry grew, and newer homes in the Lomax area on the west side, which was once its own community before La Porte annexed it. Being right on the bay, La Porte faces more wind, salt and storm surge than inland Pasadena, and that changes how we approach almost every exterior job.

La Porte's daily life runs along a few main roads. State Highway 146 carries traffic north over the Fred Hartman Bridge to Baytown and south toward Seabrook and Kemah, while Fairmont Parkway and Spencer Highway connect the city west to Pasadena and Deer Park. The old downtown along Main Street keeps some of the small-town feel, and Sylvan Beach Park, its shoreline restored between 2009 and 2013, still draws families to fish off the pier and watch the ships come up the channel. Just north of town, the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site and its towering monument mark where Texas won independence in 1836. Next door sit the small bay communities of Shoreacres and Morgan's Point, which we also serve. Container trucks heading to Barbours Cut and Bayport are a constant presence on the main routes, and the plants and terminals employ a lot of residents. Hurricane season is felt more sharply here than inland: Ike's surge in 2008 flooded homes near the bay, and every storm since has reminded residents to keep gutters clear, fences tight and doors sealed.

What La Porte neighbors book most

We come out to La Porte regularly along Spencer Highway and Fairmont Parkway, and we plan exterior work here with the bay in mind: tougher hardware, better sealing and storm-ready fixes.

Jobs we handle a lot around La Porte

La Porte keeps us busy outside. Wood fences take a beating from wind and humidity, so we replace rotted posts, re-secure panels and rehang sagging gates with stronger hardware. Gutters clog with leaves and debris and pull loose in high wind, and downspouts need extensions to move water away from slabs. Siding, brick, decks and walks grow mildew and algae fast in the damp bay air, and pressure washing at the right setting cleans them without damage. Inside, older homes near the bay and downtown have doors and windows that swell and stick in humid weather, drywall cracks from settling, and bathrooms and kitchens with tired faucets, toilets and shutoff valves. Many homeowners book a seasonal visit before June to get the house ready for storms: clearing gutters, re-caulking around windows and doors, securing loose exterior fixtures and checking that fences and gates will hold.

Questions we hear in La Porte

Does living near the bay change the kind of hardware you use?

Yes. Salt in the air near Galveston Bay corrodes ordinary steel fasteners, hinges and latches much faster than inland. On exterior work in La Porte, especially near the water, we use galvanized, coated or stainless hardware for fences, gates, exterior doors and fixtures where it makes sense, so the repair doesn't rust out in a couple of years. It costs a little more up front and saves you from repeating the job.

Can you help after a storm passes through?

Yes. After a tropical storm or a strong summer squall, we help with the cleanup repairs: resetting and replacing fence posts and panels, rehanging gates, re-securing gutters and downspouts, fixing doors that won't close after the frame took on water, and patching water-stained drywall once the source is dealt with. We prioritize anything that leaves the house open to the weather or lets a pet out of the yard.

My exterior door swells and sticks every summer. Can you fix it for good?

We can make a big difference. In La Porte's humid air, wood doors absorb moisture and swell, especially if their edges were never sealed. We plane the door where it rubs, seal all six sides including the top and bottom edges, adjust the hinges and strike, and replace weatherstripping that's worn. Sealed edges keep the door from soaking up as much moisture, so it's far less likely to stick next summer.
